Why Check-Ins are The Most Important Skill for Creating Your Healthy Lifestyle

if there’s one thing that I believe can
make the biggest impact on your overall well-being it’s having a consistent
check-in practice with yourself so I don’t mean a weight check-in a
measurement check-in or a before and after photo check-in I mean a really
really mindful mind body checking with yourself
so when I was in my teens to early 20s I hit really rough patches in my life that
were pretty hard to get through at times and naturally I found myself doing this
what I call now check-in before I even realized what I was doing so you know
fast forward many years later coaching clients one-on-one and really working a
lot on my own check-in process it flowed into my 5×5 framework that I created to
help others in the same way that this system helped me so check-ins allow you
to bring conscious attention to the state of your mind your body your
emotions your spiritual well-being your heart your joy any of that connection on
a deep level so that you’re building a lot of self-awareness present-moment
nests and it becomes a lot easier for you to understand like what works for
you in life eating habits included and it’s also easier to understand why
things don’t work for you and so before I jump into all of these check-ins
I’d love to hear from you do you currently have a check-in practice that
you do with yourself every day give me a simple yes or no or you can elaborate
what that check-in is anything that I can kind of grasp from you to get a
better understanding where everybody is with this practice and despite what my
title may say as a dietician you might think that this concept is kind of
abstract and it is I developed it because I know nutrition is just the
catalyst it’s one of many many pillars of our health that we need to tend to
it’s not just about the food and the physical nourishment
it’s about sleep and joy and purpose feeling supported managing our stress
having loving relationships and so often we move through our lives so so quickly
running from work to dinner to social engagement to friends to yoga class to
whatever else fills up our day and we lose or we may never even have kind of a
conscious moment to check in with ourselves to see how we’re
feeling and what we need and what’s not supporting us or you know what is
supporting us and how do we lean into that even more so if you don’t check in
with yourself and see how you’re feeling and how you’re just doing it’s really
difficult to discover and really understand what does and what doesn’t
work for your unique body in your lifestyle making it really difficult or
at least more difficult than it needs to be to create healthy habits that stick
over time for your life and so when you use a check-in system for your life or
really in your day-to-day you start to begin uncovering patterns and signals
from your body that you can really use to easily shift and lean into the
behaviors that support you versus ones that don’t so for example one of the
members of the method membership Jill was at this really beautiful point of
her life where she was wanting to form a healthier relationship with food she had
that realization and that awareness and she was allowing herself at this time to
enjoy anything that was brought into the office break room from sweeps to chips
you name it but after really starting the check-in process that I teach she
realized two things number one eating these sweets on a consistent basis was
actually making her feel really tired afterwards
hello unstable blood sugars have been also upsetting her stomach and
additionally she realized that most of the sweets or the snacks and the chips
weren’t even things that she really wanted or that she really enjoyed they
were just often you know not her favorite sweets she just ate them
because of their people were around she didn’t really think too much about it it
became like second nature almost and this discovery was a beautiful point
because it allowed her to not only say no to weekly sweets at the office
without feeling like she was restricting herself but it also helped her find you
know the sweet things or those you know treats or snacks that she really enjoyed
and that left her feeling satisfied so this is just one small example of how a
check-in system really helped her not only identify something that was not
working for her at all but also it helped her understand why why it wasn’t
working also how and where she could adjust so can you see how dozens of
these little aha moments just like Jill’s can
add up one after another and completely help you transform your day and
ultimately it transforms your life and your well-being over time so ask
yourself this where can you add a check in with yourself into your day it might
be after each meal it may be before each meal at the end of the day just to see
how you’re doing whatever it looks like for you right now the most important
thing is you start including a check-in during your day and make this a practice
and a habit within your daily routine so that you can really see and feel where
you’re progressing and how you’re progressing towards your wellness vision
