What Is The Warrior Diet? Should You Try It?

What Is The Warrior Diet? Should You Try It?

in today’s video I’m gonna be speaking
about something called the warrior died
and this is a really popular way of
eating which was developed sometime in
the 90s so what have we been told over
and over again that frequent meals are
gonna boost your metabolism and help you
lose weight now yes you can lose weight
eating frequent meals this is completely
true but the opposite in terms of
metabolism is actually true and that
skipping meals increases your metabolism
so before I get started on all of that
and what some of the benefits of
skipping meals are blah blah blah let’s
talk about specifically what the warrior
diet is so the warrior diet is similar
to fasting but basically what it is is
under eating during the day not
necessarily abstaining from food and
then feasting at night warrior diet kind
of seems to imply that you’re a warrior
you’re hunter you’re hunting through the
day maybe you find a bit of fruit or
something and then at the end of the day
you come home with your kill and you
feast on that and you repeat and I think
that’s basically the idea over the
warrior diet so the warrior diet was
developed by Ori Hoffer Meckler I think
that’s how his name Hoff McClure’s
argument is that the body needs some
stress and that there’s a type of good
stress and bad stress and under eating
for a certain period of time and then
feasting is a good stress on the body
it’s stressful for the body to be under
eating for a while but it’s a good thing
because of the benefits you get which I
can get to in a second so that’s
basically his argument for this he
thinks that the warrior diet style of
eating under eating during the day and
fasting at night is mimicking how humans
are supposed to be eating in nature and
think about it when you think about
conventional wisdom on eating and diet
which advocates for frequent meals
eating just whenever you get a bit
hungry that really isn’t stressful on
the body at all it’s the complete
opposite it’s very very comfortable for
the body to have access to a fridge
every 30 minutes just like exercise in
and of itself is a stress on the body
it’s good just like abstaining from food
first
period of time so that’s the basic idea
of the warrior diet so unlike fasting
which generally involves consuming
nothing but water
maybe black coffee or tea or perhaps
some sort of fat like butter or coconut
oil in coffee generally it’s nothing at
all on the warrior diet and the under
eating period allows you to eat light
foods so perhaps a little bit of yogurt
perhaps some fruits perhaps some
vegetables maybe some broth very light
foods typically high in fiber that
aren’t gonna have a huge impact on your
blood sugar the the healthy of course
but a very light and they aren’t dense
and calories as opposed to at night when
you feast on very calorically dense
foods typically higher and fat such as
animal products such as a steak and some
eggs and and other foods which you know
with one plate fill up five six eight
hundred calories as opposed to a plate
full of vegetables which can be well
under 100 so hoof mecklen makes the
argument that only protein and
vegetables are the sorts of foods the
macronutrient and the food groups which
should be combined with other foods
while other things such as fruits and
fats sugar and fats they shouldn’t
really be combined together
he believes that everything should kind
of be eaten on its own fruits and grains
sugar and and grains all these things
should be consumed separately and I’m
not sure why exactly he argues this but
I guess that went in nature and you’re
looking around for food you don’t really
find a meal together all in one in one
plate you kind of find food separately
like you find some berries then you eat
some berries you don’t typically like
find berries and nuts and milk shake and
then consume all those together it’s
kind of separate so that’s the argument
he makes it personally I don’t really
agree with us necessarily all I think
that matters is what to eat overall for
the day but if you want to follow that
specifically then that’s something you
may want to do if you want to do the
warrior diet exactly as HOF Meckler has
laid it out so why are you gonna do the
warrior diet well in terms of fat loss
and weight loss it’s gonna have no
difference right it’s gonna have
absolutely no difference than just
counting your calories and your macros
let’s make that very clear but doing
this really does match what some of the
research shows on how we ate
naturally you know it makes sense we
hunt and we we look for a big animal to
kill and during the day maybe we found
some fruit and it makes sense that’s
going to be like that so it may match
our evolutionary programming it’s not
certain but it makes sense so there also
may be some anti-aging benefits now we
know that intamin fasting for example
helps mice extend their lives and there
are many different benefits to this
because it’s a stress on the body and
that helps through the homeric response
but many of these benefits may also be
met by simply under eating and and
restricting one’s calories throughout
the day
one example is going to be on M tall and
how under eating targets M tall M tall
is a protein and it regulates cell
growth and regeneration and it’s quite
important for muscle hypertrophy or
growth just like insulin-like growth
factor it plays an important role in
muscle growth but M tall as an adult can
be causative of many diseases diabetes
and cancer being some examples food
activates mTOR and a lack of food or
fasting or under eating seems to inhibit
M tall another sort of benefit can be
with insulin and insulin sensitivity so
insulin is a hormone a peptide hormone
produced by beta cells in the pancreas
that’s where the secreted from and it’s
released basically to help shuffle
glucose and amino acids into the cell
after we eat or even before we eat even
sometimes the smell of food and and the
the prospect of eating can help secrete
insulin that’s called the cephalic phase
to prepare the body to shuffle these
glucose and amino acids into the cell
and this especially happens with
carbohydrates protein too and fat to
some extent but carbohydrates are the
most insulin or genic because they
produce you know way more glucose that
is needed to be shuttled into cells um
so basically the idea is that if you’re
spiking it and so on too much you may
become insulin resistant as type 2
diabetics are and you end up with high
blood sugar because none and no glucose
or and/or amino acids is able to be
shuttled into the cells as it would be
and as efficiently as it would be if you
were sent
to insulin um so the idea with
undereating in the phase of the warrior
diet is to increase insulin sensitivity
because you’re you’re under eating a bit
but I actually kind of disagree with
what he says here I think that if you’re
doing 20 hours of under eating and 4
hours of eating you’re much better off
doing 20 hours of complete fasting and
just drinking water because you’re gonna
kickstart things like Auto Fuji you’re
gonna get many many benefits from enter
from intamin fasting that you wouldn’t
get from simply under eating and eating
some fruit and and may be way more
difficult to do with less benefits
because if you eat a little bit and you
have a little snack um you’re really
gonna become hungry and it’s gonna
become difficult not to continue
overeating you’re gonna prevent your
body from entering a state of ketosis
because if you’re still eating fruit
then you’re gonna still be you know
preventing your body from going into its
endogenous fat stores and increasing the
rate of ketone body production and when
you are in the state of ketosis your
appetite is reduced mitochondrial
efficiency increases or toff eg
kick-starts and you get many more
benefits plus you get a reduction on
appetite which makes the process of
abstaining from food or that under
eating phase much easier so if you’re
gonna try this out I recommend going for
the entire 20 hours fasting as long as
you get enough calories macronutrients
and micronutrients and your 4-hour
eating window so that’s basically the
explanation of what the warrior diet is
there’s some kind of back and forth and
what it exactly is and that’s my take on
it basically it’s just under eating for
20 hours and eating a light foods and
then overeating um at the end of the day
for a 4 hour period in order to mimic
our evolutionary sort of natural state
of eating and that’s basically what it
is I recommend going for 20 hours of
fasting rather than under eating you’re
gonna get many more of the physiological
benefits and paradoxically it’s gonna be
a bit easier for you overall in terms of
your appetite because of you entering a
state of ketosis so thanks for watching
let me know what you think about the
warrior diet and whether you’ve tried it
before I’d be curious to know and until
next time guys I’ll see you later peace
