What is the Ketogenic Diet (in a Nutshell)?

You ready, haircut? Yes! HaircutHaircutHAIRCUT.
Hi there! Welcome to A.D. Keto. I’m Aaron.
I wanted to talk a little bit today
about the ketogenic diet in broad
strokes, kind of the basics of what it is.
How it works
Of course, I’m not a scientist, I’m not a
dietician, I’m not a nutritionist. I just
wanted to talk a little bit about what I
found out when I researched the diet. The
main idea of switching to a ketogenic
diet is to change your body from being a
carb and sugar-burning machine to a fat-burning machine. If there are carbs
around, the body’s going to use those for
energy.
Your liver turns carbs into glucose, and
that is the energy source for all the
cells in your body. BUT, when you restrict
carbs, like you do in the ketogenic diet,
after a few days, your body is smart
enough to say, “Hey, there’s no more carbs
around. I’ve got to use something else for
energy.” And so your body switches over —
it’s pretty crazy — your body switches
over from using carbs to using fats as the
primary source of energy. The liver takes
fat, creates what are called ketones, and
those ketones are actually more
efficient than glucose at powering the
cells of your body. The fat that your
liver uses can either be dietary fat – the fat
that you eat, or it can be fat that’s on
your own body. And that’s when I was kind of
like, “Oh, I can burn my own fat stores
for energy? Cool. Sign me up.”
So that’s, in the broadest strokes, that’s
what the diet is about — changing your
body from a carb-burning machine to a
fat-burning machine. I will link to some
of the studies and articles that I
looked at when I was first investigating
the diet, down in the description box. You
can check those out. In future videos, I’m
planning on talking a little bit more
about the science of how it works, and to
talk a little bit more about my personal
experience, starting and continuing
through the diet. But for now, that’s it!
