What Does it Mean to Be in Ketosis & Why Does it Help Me Burn Fat?

Dr. Mindy here and today I want to
talk about fat burning this is this next
five ten minutes of this Facebook live
is because I’ve been having so many
discussions with my patients about what
does it mean when your blood Sugar’s
high what does it mean when it’s low
what does it mean when I’m in ketosis
does it mean I’m burning fat and if I am
in ketosis how can I burn even more fat
so what I want to do is I want to show
you an explanation of what ketosis is so
you have a basic foundation because if
you don’t understand the basics and
you’re just applying the theories then
it gets really frustrating okay so the
first thing to know is that when you eat
a high carb meal what happens is it
raises your blood sugar so there you
have more sugar in your blood okay so
those of you that are measuring with
like a keto Mojo or a precision reader
what we’re looking at is how much blood
how much sugar is in your blood now when
your blood sugar goes up your pancreas
it sends a signal to the pancreas to
secrete insulin and insulin then hooks
to the blood sugar and it goes to three
places the first place it’s going to go
to are yourself so it’ll go directly to
all the cells and it will get in the
cells and stimulate the mitochondria of
the cell and it will start to produce
energy this is why you can eat a high
carb meal or maybe 10 20 years ago you
could eat a high carb meal and you would
actually have energy most of you
probably now notice that you don’t have
energy when you eat a high carb meal and
I’ll explain that then if if you
keep eating these high carb meals
you keep secreting insulin and these
cells are starting to get overwhelmed
your body is smart and it says oh my god
there’s too much sugar and insulin
coming at us so I’ve got to put this
sugar somewhere else so where it puts it
is it stores it in the liver and then it
will store it in fat so I’m a visual
learner so let me show you a little bit
what that looks like with a high carb
American diet what if I was your cell
this is what it would feel like it would
be like oh I’ve got some insulin
okay I got another insulin okay more
great then I’m eating pasta now I’m
eating bread oh my gosh you know I had a
beer and now I had some fruit and some
dessert oh and a milkshake and maybe I
had a cup of coffee with extra extra
sweetener and overtime it doesn’t know
what to do the cells don’t know what to
do so they start pushing them and
storing them in unique places okay one
of those unique places like I said is
your liver and one is fat so the first
thing you got to do if you want to
become a fat burner is you have to stop
giving your body so much darn blood
sugar which is why the ketogenic
diet works so well is that you start to
lower down your blood sugar and you
produce less insulin so that’s awesome
okay but let’s say you’ve had 10 20 30
years of living a high carb life you’re
45 years old you just decide now I’m
going to all the sudden go ketogenic and
you lose a little bit of weight but you
get stuck and you’re not losing more
weight well that’s because you spent so
much time storing it in the liver and
storing it in fact so if you stick with
the ketogenic diet if you stick with
fasting over time what will happen is
your body starts to clean the liver out
so when this blood sugar comes down it
signals to the liver to actually dump
all the stored glucose like dump it out
of you so that it can actually free up
the liver to burn fat which the liver is
an amazing fat-burning organ which is by
the way why alcohol doesn’t work very
well for weight loss because the
liver has to process alcohol it will not
burn fat that’s a total side note but I
hear that question a lot from people it
also when you lower this down and we
have less insulin your body will start
to burn fat and that’s what it means to
be a fat burner a sugar burner is
somebody who’s constantly delivering
insulin to the cells so that you’re just
using the cells and then storing the
rest a fat burner is somebody who slows
down until the delivery of
insulin to the cells and starts
to get the liver to start to burn fat
for energy and that’s why you lose
weight on the ketogenic diet now one
thing that’s really important to
understand is that how do you know if
you’re burning fat is based off the
ketones so when we start this is why I’m
such a fan of the meter is that when you
start to turn into a fat burner the
ketones will go up you want to see your
ketones somewhere between 0.5 and 3 okay
and you also should see your blood sugar
come down which some of my patients and
some of you guys in the Resetter group
have asked me like it doesn’t make sense
why am I going low-carb why am I fasting
for so long and my ketones are going up
but my blood sugar is not coming down or
some of you might be like neither of
them are moving the needles not moving
at all well that’s because we’ve got to
work with this organ right here you’ve
got to support the liver you got to get
off alcohol you got to get off
stimulants like caffeine things like
that will start to congest the liver and
then you got to get nutrients to that
liver we use products like LS and a
liver we’ve gotten supplements that we
go in and we actually start to get help
that liver out the poor liver has been
having to deal with all the stored
glucose and you’ve got to start fasting
more and and keep bringing this down so
the body has no choice but to access
access these two areas for energy
does that make sense
it’s the most simple way I know how to
explain fat burning it’s a beautiful
mechanism that our body has designed
with those of you that have been living
the standard American diet
you’ve just been raising your blood
sugar so high for so long it’s just
going to take some repetition on the
ketogenic diet to be able to bring these
stores down so if that’s helpful as
