Weight to Go – What is Ketosis?

Dr Ashton can you explain Ketosis to me?
Sure. There are some diets, some
diets which are promoted specificity because they induce
what we called ketosis and ketosis just refers to ketones
and the ketones are, if you like, the breakdown products
of as fat, as fat is degraded in the body
ketone bodies are excreted in the urine
and also on the breath, so, urm
it tends to be a feature of diets, which are what we call VLCD
very low calorie diets as opposed to the
Weight to Go diet
which is a local calorie diet, it’s not a very low calorie diet.
We specifically made it that way because
I dislike ketosis, I think ketosis is actually really bad for
people, and there is a large amount of
scientific evidence to
show that ketosis is potentially harmful
it causes damage to the
arteries, it can cause problems with bone
disease
and can cause problems with kidney
disease
so we don’t like ketosis so we don’t
like VLCD
very low calorie diets. The other thing to point
out is that if you look at the
scientific evidence about the
efficacy VLCD versus LCD,
if you look at the weight loss at 12 months there’s no difference
between them, in fact most people can’t stay on a very low calorie diet because the side
effects which we all know about
headache, the nausea and the terrible breath. If you have ever been near anybody on a very low calorie diet
you know what that’s like. Most people
can’t stay on it
so that’s why we choose a low calorie diet
which is the Weight to Go diet and we avoid ketosis.
