Surviving the Holidays & Staying Keto Episode 3: Indulge (If You Must) and Move On
Happy Thanksgiving Eve to all my fellow keto

I just want to let everybody know that the
post on the blog today was the continuation
of the Holiday Survival Tips and today’s topic
was kind of close to my heart considering
I’ve just come back from vacation… it’s
indulging and moving on.
Usually indulging for me happens on vacation
and I call it “vacation eating.”
So I’m kind of in a really weird space because
I literally just got back from vacation and
did some indulging and vacation eating and
now I’m facing the holidays.
So it’s tough and I probably can speak to
this better than anybody, having survived
doing this quite a few times…
I know what to do and what not to do.
Even with the best of intentions, going into
Thanksgiving or any holiday party, you can
have the best of intentions.
You know, you’re not going to cheat, you’ve
got your meals, you’ve got your snacks…
you think you’re good and you’re in a good
head space and then something happens and
the hand to mouth – before you even know it
– you’ve put that whatever it is into your
My advice to you is this: If that happens,
if you go into tomorrow with the best of intentions
and you’ve got a plan, you’re gonna stick
to it and something happens… stop, enjoy
that bite or whatever it is, and enjoy that
moment and know that you’re going to have
a plan to get back at it afterwards.
The worst thing that you can do when indulging
is then continue the indulging by beating
yourself up, feeling bad about it, and then
you get caught in this vicious cycle of, “Well,
I already feel bad about myself, I already
cheated…what’s one more day or one more
cookie or whatever?”
It doesn’t have to be that way and I know
personally that when I get caught in that
vicious cycle, you kind of get the “screw
Like, whatever, I’m already here.
Let’s just go balls to the wall.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
You can do a little, if you need to, if it
You know, it’s great if you can make it through
and do it and I expect a lot of you will be
able to do it.
But some of you won’t.
And those that don’t, I don’t want you to
sit at home, feeling bad about yourself and
sit in the corner with a bucket of ice cream
because you just got the “whatevers.”
It’s all good.
We can do this.
One of the things that I like to keep in mind
is when I do the “vacation eating” or indulging
or whatever it is, I make sure I limit it
to whatever – like the vacation, I was in
Hawaii for 7 days, so I limited what I was
doing to stuff that I was doing there, I knew
that as soon as I got that I needed to get
back at it.
The holidays can be a little trickier, especially
this time of year.
We’ve got Halloween, we’ve got Thanksgiving,
and then the month of December is holiday
party after holiday party.
And then you’ve got Christmas and New Year’s.
I mean, this is back-to-back stuff.
And this is where it can get really kind of
tricky and slippery… it’s a slippery slope.
If you go down, you can go down for the whole
entire next 5 weeks.
We don’t want that to happen.
So, if you do plan on indulging, if you’re
already planning on it, fine.
What’s your plan to get back?
And if you don’t and you’re not planning on
doing it, and you do… what happens next?
My 3 tips are the 3 Fs: the first one is Fasting.
And what I mean by fasting, so a lot of you
probably aren’t familiar with intermittent
fasting, I find that it’s starting to be a
new thing that people are starting to be aware
They know what fasting is but intermittent
fasting is something I practice daily and
I usually fast anywhere from 16 to 19 hours,
just depending on the day and what I’m doing.
I do an extended fast.
So, when I got back from Hawaii, I did a 24-hour
fast and during that fasting time, I drank
my lemon water, which I always drink, but
I also had lots of herbal tea and I had bone
So it’s not no calories, it’s virtually no
What it helped me do was it helped me stop
the carb – the vicious carb and sugar cycle
– that I was in and it helped even out my
blood sugar levels.
Because what happens is you have a carb spike,
if you spike your insulin levels with sugar
or carbs, you’re going to go up and what goes
up, must come down and you’re going to crash
and then you’re going to get stuck in needing
So, I stopped that by doing a 24-hour fast.
If 24 hours seems like a lot, do what you
If you’ve never done any intermittent fasting
before, do what you can and just be aware
that you may be still kind of caught in that
The second F is Fats: fill up on the fats.
When I get home, I make sure that I have my
Fat Bombs, my Keto Fat Bombs, I’ll do my cottage
cheese and sometimes I’ll throw in a few raspberries
or blueberries just to kind of give me a little
bit of sugar that I might be craving without
doing too much.
And it’s good stuff, so you gotta kind of
weigh that out.
But I do berries – limited – but I do them.
I really kind of focus on the fats.
I load up on avocado, I’ll eat lots of guacamole,
I’ll even break out the cream cheese…
I do dairy, so cream cheese is one of those
things that, if I’m starving and I don’t really
have time to eat much, and I’m just looking
to get to that next time I can actually sit
down and eat, sometimes I’ll just grab cream
cheese and flax crackers and that’s good.
It’s not something I do all the time, but
it’s a good stand-by.
The third one is Find a Treat.
And what I mean by that is – I have certain
things that when I eat them I feel like I’m
having a treat.
And, especially coming after a vacation, I’m
already sad, I’m home… so having something
that makes me feel special or makes me feel
like I’m having a treat or indulging, even
when I’m not… that always makes me feel
Going through Christmas, going through these
holidays, there’s going to be a lot of cakes
and cookies and nog and all sorts of things
that could possibly derail you.
If you indulge tomorrow, and are looking to
make that a 1-and-done, make sure that you’ve
got some of these things.
My desserts are amazing.
I think that having something like that to
fall back on, especially as you go through
the rest of the year, will make this 1-and-done
And most of all, I think the most important
thing: just don’t beat yourself up.
Really and truly, it’s pointless.
Just enjoy what you’re doing, while you’re
doing it, otherwise why do it?
Life is too short not to enjoy those moments.
That’s really my 3 big things going into tomorrow.
I’ve told you my strategies for staying keto
but what happens if you do indulge?
It’s not the end of the world.
I’ve done it.
Over the 2 and a half years, I’ve done it
a couple of times because I’ve gone on vacation.
I’ve had holidays I’ve stayed keto through
almost all of the holidays, but sometimes
I do have the best of intentions but I’m also
human and I want to love that human side of
I want you to love that human side of you.
