UniSA Online is introducing the
Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition and
Exercise) degree, and this is bringing
together two key areas in preventative
health to ensure the health of all
Australians in the future. So, students
that undertake this degree will be able
to develop foundational skills and
knowledge which will assist them in
their current careers that they may be
in, or they may be choosing to go into a
new area. Students will be able to study
completely online in their own space, in
their own environment that they’re
comfortable with. It’s collecting the
best of both degrees and putting them
into this online degree. This degree will
be offering students knowledge and core
principles in three key areas – nutrition,
exercise and health promotion. Students
will be learning what are the essential
nutritional and exercise requirements
for different age groups. So, if you look
at adolescents compared to the elderly,
those requirements are very different.
And then the other key important area is
the health promotion. So, how do you
deliver the message, how do you talk to
people about incorporating good
nutritional practices and exercise into
their daily lives. The reality is
everybody is interested in their health
and we know that by improving both
nutrition and exercise we can reduce 50%
of chronic diseases. As well as all the
teaching material and resources and
references, we’ve also got a couple of
really snazzy computer software programs
that students will have made available
to them. And these are software programs
that professionals are using in the
industry so they’ll graduate with skills
in being able to use these and be career
ready. Students are not alone. They’re
not going through this online learning
journey by themselves. They’re going
through it with their Online Course
Facilitator, their tutors who will be
available to them, and most importantly
with their peers. This is important
because not only does it support your
ideas and key concepts about the
material, but it also develops those
really important networks that students
will need once they graduate because the
students you’re studying with at the
moment, are the people you’ll be working
with in the future.
Our graduates will have a dual skill set,
which up to now there hasn’t been a
degree which has combined both nutrition
and exercise. Students are really delving
into the types of projects, the type of
skills they’ll really need when they enter
a career in health. We know that this
degree will set up students with those
core skills and passion to work in this
area in the future.
