My wife has started keto!! | Sara’s first couple of days on the keto diet
My wife is starting keto, you guys.
What? My wife is starting keto. I’m
gonna start documenting some stuff, right
after this. Hey, guys! Welcome to A.D. Keto.
My name is Aaron. This is the channel
where you can watch a weird just-woken-up
dad work his way through the
ketogenic diet. I do some keto eating
vlogs, I do some keto product reviews, I
do some keto giveaways. If this is your
first time here, please consider
subscribing, and if you do, make sure
you’re on notification squad by clicking
the bell. OH.
Top of the morning, everybody.
It’s early on a Saturday morning. This
hair is not quite as fraggley as it can
get when it’s longer. It’s completely…
What am I talking about?
Today’s a huge day for me, because my
wife is starting at keto today. And
I am beyond overjoyed. I asked her
yesterday, “Hey, what do you think about me documenting some of…you know, you starting
keto? Do you think you’d want to be
in any of this…. any of the videos?” And he
was like, “We’ll see how it goes.” So you may or may not be seeing her. At the very least,
what I’m gonna do is document the meals
that I’m preparing for her. I’m curating
her entire… like, first couple weeks. Gonna
be making all her meals, with very
special thanks to my friend Aaron Day / @FatForWeightLoss, who hooked me up with a
couple of awesome meal plans to sort of
be a guide, and also to Keto Connect,
whose cookbook, Keto Made Easy, I’m going to be leaning upon heavily. A.D. Keto: “My
wife is starting keto today?!” Look at that.
That’s awesome. I don’t think… has she
ever been on one of your videos? Check
out A.D. Keto’s YouTube channel, too.
“Meal one is a three cheese spinach
frittata, Keto Made Easy, page 40.” If it
comes out looking half as good as that, I
would be shocked.
So we’ve skipped a couple days ahead. This is Sara, my wife. [HELLO]. I toyed around with the idea of
having mosaic on her face and deepening
her voice. [Mm-hmm!] And maybe I will, and
maybe now it’s gone. Stupid. So it’s been
six meals, right? That you’ve been… it’s
been two days. Two full days of keto. I
have been over the moon on the inside.
I’ve been a mushroom cloud of joy. I’ve
been trying to keep it really cool on
the outside. Tamp it down. Tamp it down. Do you mind if I show… like, a before picture of you, from
even prior to… Mm-hmm.
Am I allowed to talk? Since this is
about me? I just wanted to introduce you.
I… sorry, I took it too far.
You really did. Okay. Hi, I’m Sara. I’m
Aaron’s wife of nearly 20 years. That’s a
whole other story. So for the whole time
that Aaron’s been doing keto, I have
NOT been doing Keto. I’ve been doing
Weight Watchers. This is probably the
fifth or sixth time that I’ve done
Weight Watchers in my life. I bet…They’re
some…There’s something to that. Well, I
bet there are some out there who can
relate to that. You’ve been through that
a half a dozen times with Weight Watchers.
And actually, it worked really well
for me. I started at very high weight, an
unhealthy weight, and now I’m 75 pounds
less than that. So Weight Watchers worked
for me, for the first 75 pounds. But then
I hit a wicked plateau. MONSTAH plateau. and Mama’s
tired of it. So I’ve been seeing and living with this, and his
keto-joy, and he finally convinced me to switch
over to the dark side. I did. I’m…to be
fair, I don’t think I ever pushed you
once. No, you know, you’re exactly
You said… he supported me in any decision
I made, and I supported him. That’s what
it was. Eventually. After I learned about
it, then I simmered down, and when I first…
when I first started, you thought I was
on the verge of death. Because his
cholesterol is… he has a very… family… a
very strong family history of very high,
dangerously high cholesterol. So anyway,
you know, me being the mainstream freak I
am, I was very worried about him dying,
and me raising the three kids on my own.
Yeah, that would have been something. At
any rate, I want to show… there’s a
picture that we took on our front porch
before we started losing weight at all,
it was like…from… Oh
Christmas? Yeah, 2015? Selfie action. So this is
us there. Kind of puffy, both of us, and
then we took the same picture a couple
years later, and this is us much more
healthy. So this is after 11 months of us
losing weight together, getting better
gas mileage. Rolling along in that
minivan. Yeah, The Swagger Wagon! And so I was overjoyed when Sara started asking
me questions about keto, and…
Grudgingly. Grudgingly or not, I was like,
“There’s interest there.” So these last two
days have been a whirlwind of me making
things to put in her mouth. She was like,
“I’ll do keto, on the condition that you
make all my food, I don’t exercise at all,
and I lose 20 pounds.” I gotta lose the
last 20 pounds. Like, that sounds doable. I
know I want to eat a lot of food, I
don’t want to exercise too much. I mean, I
go for walks every day. I’m a good walker.
But I’m not running. I’m not going to the
gym. I no gym rat. That’s the thing. And I
want to lose the last 20 pounds. And he
said okay. Yeah, I think that’s totally
within reason. You don’t have to workout.
Like, that’s… that’s the beauty of it.
There are so many different ways to do it.
Sold. So I pulled out the big guns over
the weekend, and I made a few of the
recipes in Keto Connect’s most recent…
OK, I’m gonna keep staring into the lens.
That’s fine. I think that’s… you know,
Stare into their souls, and see if you
can… I see that. So I want to just run
through the meals that we had. Did you
write them down?
I remember them. I remember ALL of them.
Let’s see. For breakfast on Saturday
morning… That was the Winter Soldier! That WAS the
Winter Soldier, thank you.
We had… I don’t even like the Winter
Soldier. You know why? His stringy hair. His
hair is so dirty and stringy. It’s never…He’s got
Snape hair. I only don’t like it cuz I
see myself in it. You don’t see her arm
over here, it’s completely metal.
Vibranium arm. I can’t show you. Mm-hmm.
So yeah, Saturday morning we had the
breakfast frittata, which was eggs and
three kinds of cheese and spinach. Did
you like that one? It was delicious. And
there are leftovers that I’m gonna have
maybe for lunch tomorrow, or for brekkie
tomorrow. Right. It was wicked good. As I
said before, I miss the crust a wee
little bit, but I understand it.
Sacrifices — some need to be made. So you
know, it’s fine. It was delish. And I am a
big fan of spinasche. Delisch spinasche.
Delische spinasche. Then for a lunch, we
split a Keto Brick. Robert Sikes’ Keto
Brick. I completely understand where
you’re coming from with the form factor.
it is… I love gnawing on it. Like, my mouth
is big enough that I can like ahhm.
Take a gigantic chunk out of it. But you
had a different experience. Yeah,
when I first opened, or when he cut it in
half and gave me my half of the brick,
and I just said, “What … what do… i do? Do I
just knaw on this?” Cuz I didn’t really
know what to do. But then I ended up
actually cutting mine up into little… you
know, little bite-sized nubs, which worked
well, and then the nubs actually produced
quite a few flaky crumbs, which I just
straight up dumped into my mouth. And
then I licked the plate. Yeah. So it was…
you know. If Robert Sikes is watching,
he’ll be happy to hear that. Yeah, I didn’t want to waste any. So
that was lunch, and then for dinner on
please let me remember… let me remember…do you remember? You didn’t write them
down! I don’t know. Why would I need to
write them down?
Do you remember? I do, YES.. Please. Crispy chicken thighs. That’s
right! With pan sauce. It was the first time I’d ever
deboned chicken thighs, and/or had
chicken thighs with skin, and halfway
through deboning all of the chicken
thighs, I was like, “Man, the skin better be
worth it,” because it was pain in the buuuutt. But I thought it totally was. Good.
That was another recipe from Keto
Connect’s cookbook. Keto Made Easy.
The pan sauce was delicious.
So I really like that we have leftovers
for you, as well. I could have that for
lunch. I can bring that to work for lunch
tomorrow, and then this morning, oh no — we had fat bombs last night. We got to make
the chocolate peanut butter… peanut
butter bombs, from Keto Connect’s… Sure did!
…new Fat Bomb Bible, and then… they were
really thick. I thought they might have
been a little TOO thick. They felt like
my throat was closing in on itself
for a while, there. Yeah, they’re… a lot
of peanut butter and and unsweetened
baker’s chocolate. They were very thick. You definitely
needed to have a little drink with them.
Yeah, but I mean… very rich. Dense.
Thick. Thick. Then this morning, we brought it down a notch.
Bacon and eggs. I had to kind of… regroup. but then… He had to recover. Right after I
made bacon and eggs, I also made the
Golden Gate Granola, also from Keto
Made Easy. I just have leaned really
heavily on that book this weekend.
I have… I don’t know if you noticed, but I
divided it up… up into little snack bags
for you. I saw that! Like serving-size snack bags. I’m bringing that to work tomorrow. Because it’s
dangerous. I felt I would like to eat….I
want to eat all of it. It smelled so good when it was baking. It’s so good. It’s got almonds
and… and hazelnuts, and coconut. mm-hmm. and hemp hearts and chia seeds? Chia…? No, it was…
yeah, maybe chia seeds as well. Or
hemp hearts. Am I getting it wrong?
But man, so good. And then for dinner
tonight, we… we had some chicken leftover
from last week that we just…you know,
what do you call it?
…Shredded? Yes. This. Shredded it
with a fork and added some Primal
Kitchen mayonnaise. Mayo. Made a nice
little chicken salad. A little onion, a
little parsley in there. A little lemon
And then in the freezer right now, we
have coconut fat bombs. Again, from Keto
Connect. So thank you Matt and Megha for
hooking us up this weekend with all of
your recipes. They’re feeding me. Yes. So what are your overall thoughts? How do you feel? I
feel good. I feel good. I do feel a little
tired, but I don’t know if that’s just
because at this point it’s Sunday night,
and I am dreading going back to work,
because let’s face it, who wants to go to
their day job? So I I do feel a little
tired this afternoon.
I watched the Keto Connect…one of their
first kind of “Getting started” videos
about keto flu, and what to expect and so
the next few days might be rough. I am a
We have been doing magnesium and
potassium in the morning. We’re gonna
continue that through the week to try to
head off any symptoms that you might
have. Because when I started, I had
massive leg cramps. I felt foggy. But I
didn’t… I didn’t supplement any electrolytes. You’re a little baby man, though.
I am a little baby man. So hopefully
it’ll be very light, if anything. I mean, I’m ready.
I’m ready. Bring it on. How bad could it be?I’ve had…
I’ve given birth to twins. So how bad
could this be? It’s nothing. So that’s
that’s kind of it. I mean, I’m really
super proud of you for starting. I’m… I
can’t tell you like… how full my heart
has been in the last couple days, as I
was making all this stuff in the kitchen.
Can I tell them what you said? You were
doing in the kitchen? Go ahead. You’re gonna have to bleep it. Oh
yeah, yeah. This morning, Aaron said…
just to himself! Like, there was nobody
really listening. He’s just kind of
muttering, he was like,
“I’m really going apesh*t in the kitchen!” I was like, Okay. All right, I mean… I guess if that’s
what it takes to get me the food that I
need…The last couple days have been the
most time I’ve spent cooking and baking
that I can remember. I just spent so much
time in the kitchen, because I wanted to
make sure that…He’s my personal
chef. I wanted to, like I said, I’m on this dark
path, he’s got to be my Jedi. He’s my Jedi
Master, and this is what I need, because I
don’t want to have to think about it. I…
the hardest thing for me is breaking
habits. Like, I’ve been in the habit of
Weight Watchers and counting my points
and tracking everything in the Weight
Watchers app for the last 18 months, and
for me, like… change does not come quickly.
Change does not come easily. So this is a
big change for me. So I need my Jedi
guide my Koncierge of Keto. I’m here for
you. Koncierge with a K. Whoa! I like that.
Not really. Not the best. So I’m very… I’m gonna help you. It’s gonna be great.
Continue to help. I’m very, very proud of you
and I love you very much. I don’t take praise or
affection well. Take it! …well or freely. Thanks. You’re doing great, dear. Yeah, you’re…
you’re okay. I’m gonna continue… you’re
fine. …plugging away in the kitchen, to
keep stuff flowing into your mouth. That’s…
really disgusting. Hopefully, most of it
will be food. Yeah, a good majority of it
will be food. And that’s… that’s about it!
Is there anything else you want to say?
No. Thank you.
I love you. I love you, too. I’m so happy, oh
That’s gonna wrap it up this video, guys.
I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you have a
fantastic day. See you next time.
It’s not a cat…what makes it a cat food
spoon?! The fact that I use it all the time to
scoop cat food? Right, but then you wash
it! You know our dishwasher is terrible. I
use this all the time for ice cream! Okay.
So I zipped ahead a couple days, it’s now….:D
