Mehndi Shivdasani ‘Pills the Beans on Environmental Consciousness | Vitamin Stree
I used to pick up trash from the streets and put it into a bin thinking that I’m being extremely environmentally conscious. Little did I know though, that there is so much more that I could be and should be doing to be more environmentally and socially ethical. I’m Mehndi Shivdasani and I’m here to spill the beans on environmental consciousness. The ultimate goal is to try and reduce the amount of trash I create and send as little trash as possible to
our oceans and our landfills. There are few changes I’ve made in my life. I have not used disposable sanitary napkins or tampons for almost six months. I have switched to using a menstrual
cup and a reusable sanitary pad. I have stopped using plastic straws, I carry a steel straw with me. I have been using unpackaged soap, the bamboo toothbrush, soapnut and shikakai solution as a replacement for shampoo, and in terms of cleaning I now use a lemon and vinegar concentrate that I brew at home and I also use soapnut solution with a dash of some kind of essential oil to clean my clothes and to do my laundry. I don’t use plastic bottles to drink water from. I tend to go to a bakery, and take my own boxes with me. In terms of ordering food, I look for places that send their food in paper packaging. so I can eventually take that packaging home and compost it. I have been organizing zero-waste meetups trying to get people together to really discuss the different challenges that they’ve been facing in trying to transition to this lifestyle. We live in a world where people use the term ‘just throw it away!’ The truth is there is no ‘away’. Whatever trash you send out eventually comes back to you in the form of contaminated soil, water, and just the environment we live in. The need for environmental consciousness is far bigger than us. We don’t own the earth. We’re actually supposed to be grateful to the earth and to this planet for everything that it gives us. I think it’s important for us as a species to realize that if we don’t make any changes and if we don’t take any action it’s not going to serve our needs, or the future generations’.
