Ketogenic Diet Basics (KETO DIET FOR BEGINNERS)

You’ve read about it. All your coworkers
are doing it, but what is it? We’re gonna
answer that right now.

So, keto – short for ketosis or ketogenic,
and this thing has exploded in
popularity these days. But, before we can
ever hope to answer the question, ‘should
I go keto?’ we first have to understand
some ketogenic diet basics, and that’s
our goal today. In the other videos in
this series, we’re gonna take a look at
keto diet pros and cons, keto long term,
what is the keto flu, keto fat loss, I
mean, do keto diets really work and lead
to accelerated fat loss?
What about keto for athletes? Man, we’re
gonna take a look at all that, and as
those guys come out, as we get those guys
finished, you’ll see them to show up in
the cards so you guys can easily click
and check them out. But, today, the goal is
very simply the ketogenic diet explained.
And, man, I’ve spent nearly 20 years in
the fitness world, in the fitness
industry, and growing up as an extremely
overweight and out of shape kid turned
competitive bodybuilder, I’ve seen just
about every nutritional strategy in the
books. So today we’ve got the keto diet
up on the chopping block. So how does the
keto diet setup? Often times, keto low carb
are very closely associated, and that
makes a lot of sense because keto diets
are very low carb. Generally speaking,
they’re 5% carbohydrates, 20% protein, and
75% fat. So if you’re looking to eat
2,000 calories a day that would be 100
from carbs which would be 25 grams, 400
calories from protein which would be 100
grams, and 1500 calories from fat which
would be 167 grams.
Man, that’s a lot of fat! Now to
accomplish this your food list is gonna
be both unrestricted and restricted. When
it comes to protein and fats, I mean,
you’re pretty much gonna be able to fire
at will, man, all the steak, butter, and oil
that you can stomach. But with carbs, man,
it’s gonna get a whole lot dicier. I
mean, most fruits like apples, bananas,
even blueberries, those guys are probably
out. Most grains, like oatmeal, like rice,
those guys are out. And, desserts like
cookies, cakes, pies? No way. So basically
you’ll be ating lettuce, and ice cubes, and
t-bones,
and bacon. The goal is to get your body
into a state of ketosis where it starts
to burn fat as fuel as opposed to the
glucose from carbohydrates. This causes
your liver to start producing ketones
which is a byproduct of your body
burning fat as fuel. Now, the easiest, most
common way to test for ketosis is with
ketostix, where your urine will very
clearly show either the presence or the
absence of those ketones, Ketones and
ketosis go hand in hand. For most people,
it’ll probably take about two days, about
48 hours for your body to start
producing those ketones to show that you
are in a state of ketosis. That’s it, man.
That’s the ketogenic diet explained. Those
are the ketogenic diet basics. That’s a
keto diet for beginners. Now, is this
