How Do You Know If You Are Fat Adapted When on Keto Diet.

hey this is dr. berry in this short
video let’s discuss seven ways that you
can know that you’re fat adapt if you’re
brand new to the ketogenic Way of eating
you may think well I think I’m doing
everything right but how do I know if my
body’s now able to burn fat or not am i
burning ketones am i burning carbs
what’s going on we’re gonna talk about
that in this video that without spending
a lot of money you’ll know if your fat
adapted or not now if you’re new to this
way of eating the ketogenic way of
eating then you can share this video on

adapted even faster now let’s talk about
the seven ways you know that you’re
becoming fat adapted first of all I want
you to understand if you’re a newcomer
the the concept of fat adaption or keto
adapted these are actually much more
complicated than they sound on the
surface it’s not like flipping a switch
from being a car burner to being a fat
burner you’re actually even when you’re
eating the stupid American diet you were
burning some little amount of fat every
day especially when you’re in bed at
night you’re fasting right and so when
you burn up your glycogen stores you
would start to burn a little bit of fat
but what we’re trying to do with the
ketogenic way of eating is to burn a lot
more fat so what we’re really talking
about is changing the percentages moving
from being a carb burner to a fat burner
is really moving along a bell curve it’s
not like an on and off switch and so
whether you’re talking about fat fat
adaptation or keto adapted or being in
ketosis
we’re always that a little bit but what
we’re trying to do with this way of
eating is to increase that so that it’s
a much bigger part of our metabolic
processes so it’s really actually you’re
talking about become more becoming more
metabolically flexible when you’re
talking about becoming fat adapted and
so I know the when you first start this
way of eating it’s like a whole new
lifestyle almost like a new religion
like how there’s all this stuff to learn
but I want you to understand
that you can listen to your body your
body will tell you if you’re doing this
right or not okay so as you move from
the standard diet to being a keto eater
these are the things you can look
forward to know that you’re doing it
right
first and foremost most people when they
start eating a fat heavy diet and really
cut down the carbs they’ll notice that
they start having some diuresis and what
that means is is that you start to peel
a lot and because as you eat more fat
and less carbs your insulin level goes
down and that allows a lot of the
inflammation in your body to get better
because the ketogenic way of eating is a
very own inflammatory diet that’s why it
helps so many inflammatory conditions
and so you’ll notice that you start to
peel a lot more often and you’ll pee off
a lot of extra fluid that perhaps you
didn’t even know you’re holding on to
and so a lot of people during the first
week or two they’ll lose 5 or 10 or 15
pounds that’s water weight that’s the
diaeresis coming from your insulin level
being lower that means you’re doing
things right number two you’ll notice
that those hangry episodes where if you
didn’t get some carbs you were about to
slap somebody those go away and then
also just your hunger in general gets
better you’re just not as ravenously
hungry a lot of people when they’re when
they’re ki towing they’ll look up and
it’s past noon and they forgot to eat
lunch that’s a great sign that you’re
becoming fat adapted that you’re not
having to eat every two hours in order
to keep from passing out like we were
taught when we were before we knew
better
another thing that many many people
notice is that as their insulin level
comes down and they become more fat
adapted their blood pressure if they
have high blood pressure will start to
return to normal that’s another
excellent way to know that you’re
becoming fat adapted and your insulin
level is returning to low normal is that
your blood pressure comes down number
four is that you decrease your carb
cravings
you know those carb cravings they’ll get
less and less as you become more fat
adapted and you’ll actually begin to
have fat cravings you’ll start to crave
fatty foods and those carbon cravings
will go away now you remember I said
earlier
this is not an on/off switch so you
can’t expect all of these seven things
to happen all on the same day they’re
gonna happen two different times and
they’re not all gonna happen at the same
time because this is a process this is
not an on/off switch so as you move
along the curve of becoming more
metabolically flexible you’ll notice
more and more of these things number 5
is increased mental clarity when you
notice this the first day you look up to
go WOW I’m so focused today I can really
think so clearly that’s a great great
sign that you’re becoming fat adapted
and that might not happen the very first
day you do this this might it might
happen a few days or a few weeks later
but just wait for it it will happen
that’s a great sign you’re becoming fat
adapted I met the one of my favorites is
the consistent all-day energy you know
how used to you would go eat lunch and
you go back to the office and you would
just be like oh dude I need a nap I’m so
tired
that goes away when you’re eating keto
when you eat a good fat heavy lunch or
when you’re fasting you don’t come back
to working for the afternoon session
with that sleepy somnolent I just need
to take a nap mentality it just doesn’t
happen that’s a great sign that you’re
becoming fat adapted the number seven is
that you if you had a demon or swelling
in your in your legs and feet before
your edema gets better it’ll go away
because one of the main things that
makes you hold fluid like that is an
elevated insulin level and as you become
more fat adapted your insulin level is
going to continue to go back down to a
low normal level it’s never gonna go
dangerously low your body won’t let that
happen unless you have a pancreas that
makes no insulin at all and that’s your
doctors job to know whether your
pancreas makes the insulin or not if you
don’t have diabetes then your pancreas
definitely makes insulin so don’t worry
about that but if you’re a type 1
diabetic you don’t make insulin if
you’re a type 2 you probably do but you
might not now some people like to check
their serum ketones their breath ketones
or even their urinary ketones to see if
they’re in ketosis which is another way
of talking roughly about being fat
adapted
you know adapted this is a very
expensive thing if you go by the seven
signs that we talked about above you
won’t have to waste your money on things
like that but if you want to do that I
think that’s that’s some people enjoy
that it’s fun to check and see what the
number is on the meter I don’t think
there’s anything wrong with that if
