Healthy Teaching Kitchens presents: Five-A-Day Green Smoothie

Hello. My name’s Jenelle and
I’m here with Healthy
Teaching Kitchen. I’m going to show you a
great way to sneak in some
vegetables in the morning. This is the Five-A-Day
Green Smoothie. What you will need is
a cup of green grapes, one
apple – a sweeter variety, half of a carrot, half a
stalk of celery and then
some spinach or greens of your choice. This is a very simple
recipe, but you maybe
didn’t think to put carrots or celery in
your smoothie before. You’re going to
find that you really
don’t taste them. So we’re basically
just going to blend these
together, but we are going to start by putting in
our greens in the bottom. I’m going to do a good
handful, or about a cup. I put those in the bottom
so that they don’t get
stuck in the lid at the top. I’m just going to cut
my other items in half
so that they fit in the blender really well. And then we’re going
to cut our apple. So you don’t need a fancy
coring tool to remove
the core from your apple. We do not want to
put that, however,
in our smoothie. So I’m just going to
kind of cut a square
around the core. So you’ll just make a
slice down one side, about
a quarter inch out from the core. And then you’ll
continue to do the same
all the way around. Once you’ve made that
first cut, you can kind of
see where the seeds are. And then the larger
pieces, the first couple
sides that I cut, I’m going to cut in half
again, just so they fit
in there really nicely. And then our grapes. And then you’re
going to add water. If you want this really
cold, you could add in
some ice for a more slushy consistency. Everything I have has been
in the fridge, so it’s
already nice and cold, but ice is optional. So you’re going to start
with just adding about
half way full for water. We just want this
to be able to blend. And we’ll add more
if we need to. So that’s basically it. We’re going to blend
until this is smooth. So it depends
on your blender. This one’s pretty high
powered but any blender
will do this job, you just might need to
blend longer. So you can kind of tell
when it’s done when you
don’t see any bits of spinach floating
around anymore, and it
looks nice and smooth. Okay, so that takes
a little while. I can still see tiny
flecks of the apple peel,
but that’s not going to hurt us. If you want to peel that
apple first, you could
absolutely do that. So I’m going to pour this
into a glass so you can
see the beautiful, bright green color. So you can see that
that looks beautiful. If the green color scares
you a little bit, close
your eyes, take a sip and you’ll find that it’s
really delicious. You could, if you really
can’t get over the green
color, put in a dark berry like blueberries or
blackberries and then it’s
going to look like a berry smoothie and you won’t
even know that that
spinach, and those great vegetables are hiding in
your breakfast smoothie. Thank you for tuning in to
Healthy Teaching Kitchen.   I hope that you try this
Five-A-Day Green Smoothie.
