Food & Wine Magazine – June 2019 – The “Keto Friendly” Review – Looking for Low Carb

August 2, 2019 3 By William Morgan

hey there it’s Steve from SeriousKeto.com and one of the features that
we’re gonna have both on the website and
the youtube channel will be periodic
reviews of cookbooks and cooking
magazines based on their keto
friendliness in this our first episode
we’re gonna be taking a look at the June
2019 issue of Food & Wine magazine but
before we do that I need to ask a little
favor of you if you’re interested in
keto cooking videos and recipes if
you’re interested in product reviews and
ingredient reviews and even tips tricks
and lessons learned from my experience
with keto and intermittent fasting
click that subscribe button right down
there and while you’re at it click the
little bell next to it that way you’ll
be notified whenever I drop new content
let’s get on with the review as I said
this is the June 2019 edition of food
Wine magazine the Aloha summer issue
there are 31 recipes in this issue of
Food & Wine magazine and I’ve broken
them down into four categories the first
is keto ready these dishes require no
modification they’re gonna keep you in
keto you’re fine
next I have keto easy to me keto easy
means you’re substituting one or two
ingredients usually with something that
you probably have on hand if you’re
already doing the ketogenic diet so like
a substitute for sugar or maybe you’re
pulling out rice and adding rice
cauliflower or replacing potatoes with
parsnips that’s keto easy next we have
keto challenging these require
significant modifications to make them
keto friendly oftentimes requiring
ingredients that you may not have and
may require a purchase so I would like
you to actually pay special attention to
those dishes that I call out as keto
challenging if you find them intriguing
if you think this is something you’d
like to see me take a stab at post it
down in the comments below and I will
add it to my list of planned recipe
cooking videos finally we have those
recipe
is that just aren’t worth it they’re
either the core ingredient is not keto
and to substitute out when it completely
you know changed the recipe or there’s
just too many ingredient substitutes and
it would really wind up changing the
character of the dish so let’s hop into
the breakdown of this month’s Food and
Wine magazine the first recipe is red
hot and cool strawberries this is a dish
featuring strawberries arbol chilies and
Greek yogurt
it looks pretty tasty and I am gonna
call that keto ready next is grilled
whole flatfish with lemon herb butter
again this is a keto friendly dish up
next cold roasted leg of lamb with
cilantro jalapeno yogurt we are now
three for three on keto ready dishes
next is BBQ spiced hot smoked salmon now
this looks very tasty but between the
combination of pineapple juice and brown
sugar I think this works its way into
the keto challenging bucket I think it
would probably require some sort of
sugar-free pineapple syrup something
that can impart that pineapple taste
without being such a car bomb that’s
carb bomb then we have there’s ooh
poached chicken with herbs this looks
pretty tasty but apparently verjus is
not a very keto friendly wine it is very
heavy on the carbs and that’s gonna make
this one uh no go that brings us to pork
loin with tomato sauce and summer salad
this dish is keto ready then we have
spice crusted beef tenderloin with caper
vinaigrette again another key tow-ready
dish we’re certainly piling them on here
in this particular issue but it’s alas
it was all too good to be true as we get
to spring onion and salami sheet pan
pizza
I think trying to replicate this dough
is gonna take something more than just
Fathead dough so I’m gonna I’m gonna
lean towards keto challenging on this
one
we then have a salad we have waxed bean
salad with potatoes capers and eggs
now I had to look up on carb manager to
see if wax beans we’re gonna be okay and
they are they’re actually a pretty keto
friendly vegetable the problem is with
the potatoes we’re gonna have to
substitute those out I’m not sure which
would be a better substitution whether
it be cauliflower or perhaps parsnips or
maybe you could just leave them out
entirely but I’m gonna call that keto
easy then we have our first dessert it
is a olive oil ice cream and
unfortunately even though you would
think you know we’ve got olive oil we’ve
got cream this would be great
pretty significant amounts of granulated
sugar and corn syrup make this a no-go
here’s where we get into sort of the
title of the magazine the Aloha stuff
there are some very tasty looking dishes
that we’re probably not going to be able
to do but there are a number that we
will be able to do including this and if
I get my Hawaiian pronunciations wrong
please correct me phonetically down in
the comment section Puleo
steak tips with Maui onion fin adine
sauce this is a keto easy recipe the one
thing we’d have to figure out is what we
would substitute for a 1/2 cup of
uncooked pearl barley so that’s
something I’d have to look into maybe
it’s something we don’t even need in the
recipe itself we then have kamaboko dip
which is a seafood dip for crackers
you’d want to make sure you’ve got some
keto friendly crackers that’s gonna be
keto easy then we have Hawaiian style
garlic butter shrimp that is keto ready
then we get to Huli Huli chicken wings
and mandu these look good unfortunately
they do again require a significant
amount of pineapple juice depending on
whether I can find a proper substitute
for pineapple juice or
not would kind of dictate if this is
gonna be a no-go
or a keto challenging right now because
it also requires raw pineapple I’m gonna
call it a no-go
we have eggplant adobo that is going to
be keto ready
cold Simon salad with soy ginger grilled
pork unfortunately ramen noodles make up
a big part of that that makes that a
no-go here’s one that looks really
interesting to me marinated lemony herb
jam with feta don’t let the name Jam
confuse you there is no sugar in this
there is a quarter cup of dried currants
but I got out on the carb manager and
relatively low carb that’ll be safe
making this dish keto ready green
chorizo and potato tacos if you have a
substitute for the potatoes perhaps
parsnips and are making your own keto
friendly tortillas then this is okay but
I would still put it somewhere between
keto easy and keto challenging then we
actually have the ingredient green
chorizo that is keto ready
the second dessert in this issue is
skillet brownies on the grill that is
gonna be a no-go also a no-go Santa
maria-style Paquinto beans because the
beans not gonna happen
mild tomato salsa that’s keto ready as
is grilled chicken with chimichurri
another one that I’m excited about is
the traditional Santa Maria barbecue
Oakwood grilled
tri-tip I really love tri-tip I think I
first found out about tri-tip on like a
Guy Fieri video ten years ago and at the
time no one had heard of tri-tip so it’s
pretty easy to find not that expensive
now a lot more people are familiar with
tri-tip it’s harder to find cost more
but this is definitely a recipe I’d like
to make basil ravioli probably gonna be
a hard one to do and do justice to I’m
gonna call this one a no-go grilled corn
on the cob with
calamansi Mayo corn sorry
no go ember roasted sweet potatoes with
coconut caramel mmm that misses the mark
on a lot Aikido stuff that is a no-go
grilled scallops with miso corn salad if
we substitute out the corn which we will
this becomes very keto friendly we’re
gonna call this keto easy and we close
things out with another dessert this one
fortunately is keto easy it is the mint
stracciatella semifreddo in summary in
this issue of food Wine magazine over
half of the recipes are either kiddo
ready or keto easy there are also at an
additional four I’m guessing recipes
that I would call keto challenging so if
you found any of those intriguing and
would like to see me take a stab at
making them in a cooking video again
please post it down in the comments
below and I’ll see what I can do
thanks for watching
