Dr. Sarah Hallberg: Is it safe to do a ketogenic diet while on SGLT2 inhibitors?

– Okay, is it safe to
attempt a ketogenic diet
while on SGLT2 inhibitors?
– No.
This is a really important issue,
and I’m so glad for whoever
asked this question.
But SGLT2 inhibitors can
cause diabetic ketoacidosis,
even a very specific problem
called euglycemic ketoacidosis.
Usually when someone is in ketoacidosis
it’s because their blood
sugars are sky high,
but euglycemic ketoacidosis
that is specifically caused
by SGLT2 inhibitors can occur
with normal blood sugar.
So it’s actually even more difficult
and therefore more dangerous
because it’s harder to diagnose.
So anyone who is beginning to start
on a ketogenic lifestyle needs
to stop their SGLT2 inhibitor
well before making dietary changes.
And this is why it is so
important not to do this
without medical supervision
if you’re on any medications,
because you should not be
making these medication changes
without the oversight of a physician.
So an incredibly important topic,
and one, again, I just
wanna state again and again,
requires medical supervision.
