Dr. Sarah Hallberg: How do electrolytes affect blood pressure on a ketogenic diet?

– All right, how do electrolytes
effect blood pressure
when on a ketogenic diet?
– Well actually that’s a
perfect timed question,
because it really goes to what
we were just talking about
earlier, which is sodium is actually
an important electrolyte.
We all need salt, okay.
We have to have salt to function.
And again, when you’re eating
a lot of carbohydrates,
our kidneys will hold onto salt.
And when you start a ketogenic diet,
they will actually excrete it.
So the kidneys are our
regulator, if you will,
of sodium in the body.
And so if they’re
excreting it when someone
is beginning a low carbohydrate lifestyle,
we need to replace it.
So again, that’s why
sodium is so important
for most people, especially
early on, in a ketogenic diet.
If you have a history of blood pressure,
those are (chuckles), those
are things that you wanna talk
to your personal physician about.
But oftentimes because
of the sodium excretion,
we see blood pressure can drop
while on a ketogenic diet.
