Does the dietitian eat OATMEAL?

On this episode of Would Jaime Eat It we’re
diving into oats! Welcome back to Would Jaime Eat It I am Barclay
and this is our resident nutrition guru Mr.Jaime Rothermich. We are coming at you live from the kitchen
once again. It feels good… It just feels right, natural. I’m going to walk into the pantry for just
a second because in the pantry is a big ‘ol bag of OATS which is the topic of today’s
episode. You get this question a lot in your individual
client consultations and we just happened to get another one through our Facebook site
as well with someone wanting to know about oats and oatmeal. A lot of questions about gluten and gluten
free, is it either one of those and kinda what’s the deal with it. So, give us your Jaime GOOD, BAD and VERDICT. OK. The GOOD is it is a fairly unprocessed carbohydrate
source which therefore gives it better fiber content. We always talk about fiber content in relation
to GI health but also it can help to decrease our bad cholesterol as well. Oats can also … and when I talk oats and
oatmeal I’m usually talking about whole oats or steel cut oats not the instant processed
version. But OATS can also be gluten free. On the bad side, they can also contain gluten. And you’re thinking “WHAT?”. That’s confusing. Because, oats are processed, or I’m sorry
sometimes processed, in a facility that has other gluten containing grains and there is
a … cross contamination. Yes. Watch out for oats or whole oats or steel
cut oats because as good as they are they can also increase our insulin levels. But, to combat that, we want to add a protein
source or fat source to help bring those insulin levels down. So, it’s good but in the context of other
nutrients as well. My Verdict is YES, I like oats. It’s one of my go-to carbohydrate sources. That, and sweet potatoes, are my two favs. Do you only use oatmeal in the morning? I usually do only because I feel better with
them in the morning. I’ve tried them in other areas of the day
and I just feel lighter, more energetic by having them in the morning. OK, there you go. Personal preference. I think what I want to do is let’s include
an additional download for viewers at WouldJaimeEatIt.com. Am I writing it? You’re gonna write it. This is your thing. Um, let’s give them your top 3 brands of oatmeal
that are kinda your go-tos. This may or may not be on there. This is one that just happened to be around
so we used it as reference here, but let’s give that additional information at WouldJaimeEatIt.com
or Facebook.com/WouldJaimeEatIt.You can download his top 3 go-to brands for oatmeal. Thanks everybody for watching. We appreciate it. We’ll see you next episode of Would Jaime
Eat It?.
