Careers in Oncology – Dietitian | Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

My name is Susan Haines.
I am a registered Dietitian and in an oncology
setting what that means is I provide medical
nutrition therapy to cancer patients.
The reason I choose clinical nutrition as
a profession is that I always was interested
in the link between diet and health.
A typical work day is mainly direct patient
care.
Now that can be through individual counselling
of a patient and it can also be through the
provision of group education classes.
An example of something that I do is I provide
group classes to breast cancer patients to
address their questions.
A day-to-day highlight that I have in my job
is when I see a patient who’s been struggling
to meet their nutrition needs whether it’s
their calories, their protein, fluid requirements
that are needed for hydration and after having
meet me they’re better able to do this.
