Ask the Scientist #90 – Keto in the Offseason

Hello my name is Dr. Jeff Golini and
welcome to another episode of, “Ask the
Scientist” this shows about busting myths
bringing you the truth. Hey the latest
phase from 2017 and I say the latest
because this one came and went so fast I
predicted it just like Atkins and the
rest that you can’t introduce Keto: low
fat, or high fat, no carbs; and not educate
people about the benefits, the setbacks,
the pitfalls, and that it’s not a
sustainable diet and you can’t have
companies coming out with desserts and
all the things they came out with – by the
way they are gone – and not educate
people that you don’t just eat a keto
dessert and think you’re going to lose
weight if you aren’t following a
ketogenic diet. So ketogenic in the
offseason what form what are you trying
to accomplish? Most of the athletes in the offseason are trying to gain something
they’re trying to gain more size they’re
trying to gain more muscle why would you
want to hinder your training by going
zero carbs and feeling terrible? So I’m
not a fan of the keto diet anyhow if
you’re a competitive bodybuilder which
means bikini or anything within that
physical fitness sport you need to learn
how to control your carbohydrate intake
it’s crucial but guess what you need to
learn how to control your protein and
your fat and your overall macros and
calories so it’s not a one thing deal.
But if you’re in the offseason and you
tell me look I’m gonna put on muscle
that’s my goal for the offseason but I’m
gonna go keto
I’m gonna tell you you’re not gonna
succeed you’ve got to be able to fuel
yourself in a workout without
carbohydrates without glycogen you are
could accomplish that I guarantee you
you’re not gonna make the gains you’re
not gonna get the growth that you so
desire and all you’re going to do is
you’re gonna put your body in a state
that when you actually start dieting
where do you have to go you’re already
eating less calories you’re already
taking in less time you’re not gonna
have anywhere to go you’ve got to eat
more food in the off season so you have
somewhere to go when you’re dieting when
I was a competitive bodybuilder and let
me tell you dr. Jeff never came into a
show that I wasn’t the best conditioned
athlete I was shredded I was ripped and
guess what I eat carbs like they were
going out of style
did I control them absolutely but I
controlled my overall macros I knew how
many calories I needed to get in I knew
how much protein and I minimize the fats
I got in just enough fats to keep me
going but again I use carbohydrates for
fuel because they burn better your brain
all your organs your muscles in order to
fire and pump needed now if you are set
on a keto diet and you say dr. Jeff you
don’t know what you’re talking about it
works for me hey you got to find out
what works for you but I guarantee you
that you need to come out of ketosis in
order to treat it so how about taking a
scoop of Karbolyn.
It is completely burned up in about 60
minutes you’ll have the best workout of
your life and then you can go back into
ketosis the rest of the day don’t care
if it works for you great but I’m
telling you it doesn’t work for the
majority of people and I’m not a fan of it.
All right that’s my take on going keto
during the offseason. All right everybody take care
I’ll catch you next time.
